How do I know if my baby has colic?

He is 3 weeks old and I have been breast feeding and he would just scream for a couple of hours a day every time he was awake. I have switched to formula and he is still screaming, it has only benn 24 hrs. I give him gas drops and that helps get the gas out but he doesn't usaly have alot of gas just a little and he doesn't pull his legs up to his chest and scream, he just screams and screams, nothing works to calm him!!

Some doctors think colic is caused when a baby needs to release stress, and has no other way. Not sure what they would be stressed about, but they could just have that kind of personality. My son had this for about 1 1/2 months. I would turn on the vacuum cleaner, worked every time. This was annoying to mom and dad, so I recorded the sound of the vacuum and put headphones near his ears, but not on his ears. Worked very well! This will go away, hang in there! Remember, if you get very stressed out, it is OKAY to put the baby in his crib and walk away for a bit. Your stress will only make him cry more!

Calm down....I know it's hard. If you haven't complealt stopped nursing go back to it if you can. NB babies do get a little gassy if you are only BF but it's the easiest food for them to digest. You can try cutting ALL dairy out of your diet he could have a little milk allergy & if you put him on reg. formula you could try a lactaid type formula. Also babies tend to have a crabby period and it usually doesn't last very long. my son is 10 weeks and he went through the same thing. But my very best suggestion for you is for you to get a baby sling...it's the only thing that helped my son he wanted to be close to someone all the time and he used to scream all day long nothing would help and since we got the sling it's been like night and day. You can go to the web and look it up on yahoo it's called a peanut shell baby sling and it will direct you to their site you enter in you city adn it can show you stores in your area that have them. or you can order them online.....my guess it will help a lot. And if the gas drop arn't doing anything stop them. Also if he is hacing less BMs he might be constipated...you can try to give him 1/2 strength apple juice in a bottle like 2oz. juice 2 oz. water and that will get him going if he's constipated. good luck!

Drives you crazy doesn't it. I have 4 children and each of them had their own bouts of "colic" Really I realized that the more stimulated the baby was during the day, the more they had to "cry out" their frustrations in the evenings. Baby is due for a check up anyway, especially if breastfeeding, Make sure baby is growing like he should and restassure it will be over soon, give baby a bath before bed, quiet things down during the day----Calm down yourself, babies sense a tense mommy, keep up with the gas drops and I always used a warm hot water bottle on babies tummies that seemed to lul them to sleep. My daughter liked to be swaddled real tight in her blanket and was also a tummy sleeper (dont tell) good luck

It he is screaming for hours at a time and there is nothing you can do to consoul him it sounds like colic, try Nutramigen or alamentum formula, the Enfamil work miricles for my son who cried for a month straight also putting them in the swing swaddled helps. I would see your doctor to make sure there is nort a underlying proble though. And don't be afraid to just put the baby in the crib a go outside for 10 min take a breather I know how stress ful it is but they will grow out of it. Also check for ear infections, that was part of my sons continual crying but with antibiotics and Nutramigen and the swing it really helped me keep my sanity.

I went through this with my first baby. I was breast feeding and had too much milk, so she wasn't getting in enough sucking. She cried so long and hard and looked like she was in pain when she was doing it. Very hard for first time Moms or anytime Moms. I went through this for two weeks until I almost went deaf from her screaming in my ears. My friend suggested a pacifier so I got the NUK and plugged her in. It was like I died and went to heaven. I would suggest a pacifier. Good luck and don't loose hope.

First of all breast fed babies do get colic. My eldest daughter did. Breast milk is best. Hold him over the shoulder and pat (very firmly) just above the center of his back, walk around as you do this. that's the only thing that seemed to help. He also feels your tenseness, have someone help you.

My oldest son had cholic. Take him to a chiropractor. Seriously it works and they don't crack his bones and twist him in half. All they do is massage and it helps a lot. After a few visits my son was much better.
