Problem opening Microsoft Word file.?

I am having trouble opening a Microsoft Word file. When I try to open it, I get the following message: "The document caused a serious error the last time it was opened. You may continue opening it or perform data recovery by clicking 'Recover Data.' Clicking 'Recover Data will extract text out of your document but all formating and pictures will be lost."

I tried to open and I got the following message: "Word failed reading from file. Please restore the network connection or replace floppy disk and retry."

When I tried to recover the data, only part of my document opened. I have also tried to change it from .doc to .txt and it will not open in Word, Wordpad or Notepad. When I pressed control, alt, delete the WIndows Task Manager says Word is not responding. How can I repair the document? Is there a program I can download for free to repair my document?

Update:

Tried to use Open and Repair feature and I get the following message:

"Word failed reading from file. Please restore network connection or replace floppy disk and retry."

Update 2:

Could there be something wrong with the floppy disk? How do I fix the floppy disk?

Try using Open and Repair feature

    -Open Word

    -File | Open...

-Navigate to the file location and select the file (just single-click on the file in the dialog box)

-Click the down-arrow on the Open button

    -Select Open and Repair

That's one of two issues. Either a setting came unset on your computer that tells it to open .doc files with Word, or you are trying to open Word 2007 documents. Go to Start->Control Panel->Folder Options, and click the file types tab. Scroll down to .doc and make sure it is set for microsoft word. If it isn't change it or click New and add it. If it was a .docx document, you need to download the free converter from microsoft's website to read the 2007 document in 2003.
