Bob Montana, a native of Stockton, Calif., who lived most of his life in New Hampshire, growing up in Manchester and attending Central High School, a source of many of the "Archis" characters. Montana, who began his cartooning career while in high school, created "Archie" comics in 1942, when a publisher commissioned him to draw a teenager-oriented strip based on the "Henry Aldrich" radio show. Montana later was to say the the character Jughead was creater "on the drawing board. I never knew hem. Archie's girlfriend, Veronica, was based on the film star Veronica Lake, while Betty, Montana once remarked, "was an old girl friend of mine." the principal, Mr. Wetherbee, Miss Beasley, and other characters also were said to have been based on Montana's classmates and neighbors.
