anybody else have a problem with their dog having seperation anxiety?

While we are home our 10 month old shep/collie mix is so good, but when we put him in the finshed basement while we go to work or go out, he's so bad, chewing the door, or whatever else he can find. he has plenty of toys and treats, food and water. He even started pulling some panelling off the wall and chewed the floor up, which was ok cuz we were going to rip it up anyway.

The pup is afraid that you are not coming back. Puppies have very short attention spans. Put him in the basement for a short period maybe fifteen minutes then come back and let him out. Do this several times. Then increase it to twenty minutes, then thirty minutes, then forty five minutes, then an hour then an hour and half and so forth. Each interval must be done several times so the pup gets use to you coming back. Another thing that would help is if you or another family member or friend could come home at lunch time and walk him and play with him a bit. It is a long time (8 hours or more) for a young pup to be alone.

First off I would try and do the interval thing where you leave him in the basement for short times like another person mentioned if it still doesnt work I would try crate trianing him. Now I know it may seem cruel but you dont have to get a small crate that is just his size you can always get a larger crate meant for larger dogs we did this for our puppy who is a small breed. She has plenty of room to walk around and stretch play with some toys ect. We also have food and water bowls and a bed in their for her. This way we dont worry about her being in their for long periods of time. I think she also likes it better than her smaller crate. Also your dog will end up liking his or her crate and will think of it as a place where he can relax and get away from everything. I hope this helps. bye

I dont crate train my dogs but I know it can work with anxious pups. My sister stopped using the crate and her dog chewed everything in sight and started to lose his hair. They crated him again and he is much happier. It really does work. Sometimes if the dog has too big of a space, it gets nervous. Maybe you could try blocking him in a small part of the basement.

I agree the Kong with peanut butter or liver paste works great, tire the dog out before you leave and leave the radio or tv on. They really love to hear the people talking on the radio, I have found this works well with my dog.

    Good luck!

I just asked a similar question. Most people suggested crate training, which I dont really want to do. Others suggested leaving for short periods of time and coming back to surprise the dog and either punish him if you catch him in the action of destroying things or praise him if not. Keep doing it and increase the time you leave him in small intervals. I think that is what I am going to try.... good thing dogs are worth such the hassle :)

How often do you walk your dog? They need about an hour of outside excersie daily, often dogs need to reslease there pent up enery. A tired dog is a good dog. They even have backpacks for dogs you can put bottles of water in when you walk uses more enery.Shep/collie are high energy they are breed to do a job maybe you should make up a game that will help him be true to his breed. A little extra work can save you from thousands of dollars in damages.

Go to the pet store and get a toy called a Kong. You can peanut butter on the inside of it. It should keep him busy for a while. You can get a bunch, put the peanut butter in them and then hide them around the basement. Another thing that works is to get him a playmate. One of my dogs suffers from separation anxiety so we got her a friend and she has been fine since.

my mothers canines has seperation rigidity like loopy. He won't consume if she's no longer around or watching him and he surely seems depressed if she is going on holiday. They used to have one in all our neighbor teenagers drop via to take him in our outdoor and play fetch with him. (we've been somewhat close good buddies with our friends, so we depended on them a hundred%) yet whilst they moved away, my mom have been given him a bunch of balls, some bite bones, and one in all those enormous pillows to place on. This appeared to assist alot for him, and whilst my mom might get homestead, she might sit down in the kitchen and look at the paper so the canines might consume (the canines..loopy..) additionally, we ultimately ended up getting a 2nd canines too, so as that they shop one yet another organization in the day, and are many times snuggled up asleep at the same time whilst we get homestead from artwork.
