Using Windows XP, how do I change the characters my keyboard will allow me to type? I'm looking for a way to

type such things as exponents, the "degree" symbol, etc.

You can do that by using the insert symbols or changing your font to windings

In whatever program you are using, search for the fonts option and change your font their. A font is how the computer displays keyed in characters and there are many fonts to choose from. You may also download many free TTF (true-type-fonts) fonts and put them in your windows/fonts folder and then they will be usable along with pre-existing fonts.

Every program has its own font setting if its a program for publishing of any kind... the operating system does have defaut fonts to select but thats overidden by each individual program.

Just use the Character Map accessory to enter anything you want.
