How do I correct computer running WinXP root drive problem?

I have an HP desktop computer that somehow thinks the root drive is drive "d" which in reality is the CDrom drive. Consequently, security updates won't install and the same updates download each time I log on. Updates to Adobe Acrobat won't install at all because there is no way to correct the "install to" drive designation.

I've tried correcting the setting in the BIOS but that doesn't seem to cure the problem.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Bill

Update:

I've tried the reformat/reinstall but the )*&^*&^$&&^% HP recover disk hangs up during the installation process. It simply won't complete an install.

Curiously, I have an HP laptop that won't recover either.

Both have authorized recovery disks shipped with the computers. One of the worst trends ever was the proprietary recovery disks!

This probably would have happened because the system variable might have got altered. Try to issue the command 'echo %windir% ' in the command prompt and see if the system prints the correct root directory(windows directory).

In case if it is not then go to the SYSTEM from the CONTROL PANEL and click on the ADVANCED tab. Now at the bottom you see the button ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES, click on that and go to System variables.

Now look for a System variable 'windir' there. If you dont find one click on the NEW button and add the variable name 'windir' and type variable value %SystemRoot% which will automatically take root directory of windowsxp.

I hope this solves your problem to detect the windowsxp root directory.

In case if you already find the variable name 'windir' in the list try to change the variable value to %SystemRoot% to make the system variable use the correct windowsxp directory.

The only thing I would do is make sure to back up your important files, and then re-install XP. Although, if it was the original disk of XP that is screwing up anyway, you may need to acquire a new disk. If you can wait a few weeks, don't buy a new copy of XP, Microsoft Vista is releasing very soon and it's definetly worth the cost. Good luck though!

Reformat and Reinstall XP..if you have the disc. Backup your data though.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
