What do you do to deal with the stress of the holidays?

With the gift buying, dealing with extended family, financial stress and stress on the marriage, the holidays can be more hassle than merry. What do you do to keep yourself from going crazy?

We try to stay away from shopping malls whenever possible, preferring to buy at local shops where gifts will be more personal and the atmosphere is truly more filled with holiday spirit. We also don't "go crazy" with gifts. Long gone are the days when we're willing to put ourselves further into debt with gift giving--it's just not worth it. Also, don't try to go for the latest, greatest toy or gift. I'm more than happy to let someone else stand in line for hours at WalMart (aka SprawlMart) waiting for that brand-new PS3 for $600. In the meantime, I'll wait six months and pick one up for much, much less!

As for the actual holiday itself, we spend it with my parents who are wonderful cooks, so the holiday meal is something to look forward to. My mother is the type of person who likes everything to be perfect, which adds unnecessary stress at times, but a generous consumption of Zinfandel always helps with that!

I don't have stress because I do not let anything bother me about the holidays. Look, this is a happy time. Make it happy! Look at all those things you have do as fun. The stress will rub off on other people. Christmas should be fun for the kids so make it that way by having fun yourself. Stress is all in your head. It is not the stress that gets to you but how you handle it. Don't worry about the things you can't do anything about just the things you can.. Merry Christmas

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry! Also, I don't over spoil anyone, not even the kids. If some people don't like the idea that I thought enough to buy them a box of candy, or a bottle of wine, then tough! It's about being with your family and giving what is financially comfortable to you, not "outdoing the Joneses".

Not everyone loves the holidays. Don't go into it expecting perfection, and most importantly, talk with those you love about your and their expectations. Take a break and just look forward to some peace and quiet when they're done.

Lot of Liquor..? No,, just kidding. make sure you have sometime alone. Make sure you take time to not shop or stress about in laws.

Make sure you put yourself in a different spot, like going outside or going to a movie or a park.

It's only stressful if you make it stressful. I plan ahead myself. I don't go to stores (the biggest stress!), I shop online instead. Many online stores offer free shipping or very low shipping cost.
