Ford Contour problems?

I have a 1999 ford contour 4 cyclinder 2.0 liter and it will not start. We are getting spark to the spark plugs as well as fuel to the injectors. When we pull out the spark plugs they are very wet. It sounds like the care engine is flooded. We are stuck at what to do. We have cleaned the spark plugs with ether and it is still doing the same thing. Any ides on what the problem could be?

Update:

Ok they have the car started but it will not stay started. They think that it is something with the throttle or maybe a sensor..any ideas?

What is the mileage of this vehicle? Yugie 29 is right about these engine's propensity for timing belt failures. How does the engine sound during engine cranking? Are there UNIFORM compressions heard, during engine crank?

Check to make sure the timing belt is not broken, make sure the belt is turning while you are trying to start the engine, they like to shred the teeth off of the belt at the crankshaft. Also, on the 2.0 liter I would suggest a compression check. The engine may be worn past it's usefulness and not making enough compression to fire.

Update: If it starts now, but will not run without your foot on the gas, check the idle air control valve. You may also have a bad mass air flow sensor.
