How does this poem make you feel? It was forwarded to me and I wanted to share it here.?

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,

I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.

My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,

My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,

Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,

Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,

Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.

In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,

So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,

But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.

Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the

sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,

And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,

A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,

Update:

Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.

Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,

Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,

"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!

Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,

You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,

Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light

Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,

I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night." "It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,

That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,

I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"

Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',

And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son i

Update 2:

in more than a while,

But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,

The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

I can live through the cold and the being alone,

Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,

I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,

Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,

To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,

Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,

"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little for all that you've done,

For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,

"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.

To fight for our rights back at

Update 3:

back at home while we're gone,

To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,

To know you remember we fought and we bled.

Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,

That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Its very heartfelt, it evokes pride in our armed forces and appreciation of their sacrifices.

Young men and women like the soldier in this poem are what make being an American so great. There are those few that love their country so much that they would lay their life down for us. We should help all veterans and current soldiers in anyway that we can.

This is true you know. How each and every soldier is suffering in their own ways for the freedom that you all take advantage of each and everyday. Just to walk down the street and laugh with your friends, each breath and each laugh you take is because of a soldier who has died in past conflicts, and still continue to die. Its the sacrifice of a US soldier. And its a sacrifice that they have taken since our independece in 1776, and will continue to take until the day man cease to exists.

This is something I wrote, not exactly in response to yours, but just to show you all...

Your daddy died a hero they tell him, your daddy died so brave

But all that little boy understands is his daddy's name on a grave

Your husband died a hero they tell her, he died so we could live free

But all i really wants, she says, is my husband here with me

Your son died a hero they tell them, he died so this war could be won

But the parents dont really care about war, all they want back is their son

Your brother died a hero they tell her, he died so mankind can live on

But the sister doesn't want to ; after all her brother is now gone

Your friend died a hero, they tell us, he died so this violence will finally end

But war isnt the answer I say, and now weve lost another friend

You died a hero, they tell him, you died so others could live without strife

But he doesnt care about others, all he wants back is his life

Each and everyday, a US soldier falls for the republic of the United States of America so we all can live free, and alive. Without desposition, and without tyranny on our lands. Yes we may not be perfect. There are loop holes, there are scandels. But remember...we live better than 80% of the world.

    Praying daily for

    a dream, shattered for some

    Not knowing,

    Yet, we fight until

    day comes, or when

    No longer alone

    Sights of war he's bound

eyes, to se his firey dawn

    Where he saw the war

    So heavy and so full

    See how proud he was

His all he gave not less

He carried his lost soul home

It makes me wonder why there's no mention of "Oil" or "Halliburton Profits". It is for oil and for Halliburton profits that young men and women are being crippled, or killed, in Iraq, every day.

It makes me sad that children are protecting our borders and dying in incredible numbers so that we can sleep in our warm beds, over extend our credit cards, watch soap operas and ignore our neighbors and homeless vets on street corners.

And it makes me proud beyond belief that we live in a country where someone would voluntarily go in the armed services to risk their lives and future to ensure that we, who stayed home, would have one.

I think it's wonderful. Sometimes we need to be reminded how this country got to be so great.

Could you e-mail me the poem please?

    Thank-you.
