You could take on a part time job, if you aren't already working, but so could he. What is he doing about getting money to pay for his books and such?

Well, the best thing to do is "hedge" the cost of books by buying as they are needed. For instance, most professors hand out a syllabus on the first day of class which shows the books needed for a particular section of the semester/quarter. What's the point of purchasing the books BEFORE they're actually needed?! Plus it gives you some time to check out Amazon.com and Ebay.com for a cheaper alternative.
Next, he could ask the instructor the difference between textbook editions- which mean the difference between a new book with few changes at a VERY high price, and a slightly-used prior edition with 'nearly' the same text at the fraction of the price!
Finally, have him see if the books (and the edition- this is very important!) is online in his school's 'virtual library' as an 'e-book' and/or at the local library!! He's only going to get a fraction of the cost of the book back IF they actually TAKE IT BACK when he returns at the end of the semester to sell it!!!
As a graduate student, I've spent close to $150 in books this semester- and we're now at the end of it!- and the 'quote' for my textbook bill at the local campus bookstore was $1200!!! Sooo, you can see how you can totally EXTEND the dollar when in college and without money for textbooks!
Good luck!

You can have your son go to the financial aid dept. and fill out a "change of circumstances" form. It may be called something else depending on what college he goes to. This form will allow him to adjust the "normal" amount allowed for things like transportation, food, clothes, ect. If he has a job on campus or off and has to drive there his car insurance, gas ect. can be added to his budgeted allowance. The additional money will probably come as a stafford loan, perkins loan or some additional "free" aid. Also, if money is really tight you can NOT claim your son on your taxes, let him claim himself and then when you fill out the FAFSA form this spring he will not list himself as a dependant and get more financial aid. Hoep this helps.

I would have to say that Ebay is a great place to get extra money. A professor of mine told me about half.com, it is a place you can sell and buy school books. It's a great place to go if your books are expensive, like mine were.
