Do you need the internet to play Nintendo Wii?
Hello, I don't know much about gameing and I just bought my 9 year old son Nintendo Wii for Christmas. Instead of researching it first, I have been doing it now. I see a lot of info about needing the internet to play Wii. My son, where he lives, does not have internet access. Is it really worth him having the Wii if he does not have the internet? The second part of my question is this, I have the internet but my computer is upstairs and the game would be downstairs, how does it work if there isn't any internet on the TV that the game is playing on? If someone could teach me Nintendo Wii 101 (That's a basic college crash course) I would appreciate it greatly.

you won't NEED the internet to play it. none of the launch games for the Wii are online capable. the only thing that internet connection is really good for at the moment is system updates and purchasing old school games via the Wii shop store. as far as I know, the system updates are mainly to add a few things to the "channels" on the consoles menu screen and some options in the system settings. none of these seemed too important after they were updated on my console. you wont have to worry about the computer and system being in different areas of the house. the Wii utilizes "Bluetooth" wireless connectivity so connection wires are not necessary. if you have a wireless modem or a wireless router (they usually have a transmitting antenna on them or say something along the lines of "wireless" or "wifi" on them) that you run your internet source through, then you can connect with that. if you do not have that, Nintendo makes a "wifi stick" ($40 new, $20 used... make sure you buy Nintendo's... no matter what the guy at the store says) that plugs into the USB port on your computer and the Wii can connect with that. if you are planning on using the wireless stuff for your son's Wii and you start to have trouble setting it up, just call Nintendo's customer service. it has been, in my experience, the best customer service line I have ever had to use. i hope that helps a little... it's a little daunting if you don't really know much about wireless or gaming consoles in general but if you read the manuals that come with the system, it shouldn't be too difficult. have fun playing Wii Sports!

Okay, well first of all... the internet is just to used to play with friends when you are in different houses. Your son will still be able to play all of the games by himself and also will be able to play them with friends when they are over.
Now, if you are jet set on him being able to play online I'd say get a wireless internet connection, not an access point. They are not too expensive and that will make your whole house wireless. This means that his DS and his Wifi, any laptops or other computers can work online without any cables what so ever. A Wireless access point works for computers but not the DS (not sure about the Wii)
All in all the internet situation is a perk, not a necessity and the system will still rock to have even if he can't play games with friends outside of the house, it will give him a reason to go an be social :)

no it does not but some features (such as the news weather and internet channels do not work without it) and if you would like to plug your wii in2 the internet try buying a nintendo wifi usb connector its wireless and easy to setup (wii comes with built in wireless) and internet is not a big part yet espescially because most of the games do not yet use internet

Don't need the internet, but all updates would be through the net. Also, shouldn't be a problem as long as you have wireless internet.
