hi bud,,i think it may be the switch its self that's causing this from what you said,,and there is a solenoid switch that causes a lot of problems on these vans i have a box full of bad solenoid switches out in the shop, that all look like new,and are bad,,i have put four of them on one van in the past six months, and all came from auto zone also and they wont honor the warranty on them, the last one i got at advance and it seems to be doing good so far,but the solenoid is sort of what your sounds like,my step son has one of those vans and his goes out every 7 or 8 months ,but i don't know what causes this to happen, but on yours id try tapping on the solenoid switch there on the fender well, and see if that helps and if it does you may have found your problem,,also make sure the adjustment bolts for the ignition switch aren't coming loose on it,,this causes the switch to loose location, and makes it appear to be bad,if you don't find it,i can be found on here any time after 8 pm,right now im trying to run two businesses and its driving me nuts trying to get the other one going good, but let me know and we,ll figure it out,,good luck.,,PS the problem isn't going to be in the column its self,,probably in the lower part of it where the main switch is.,thought id add that,,good luck.

Sounds like a loose wire in the column...If it was the solenoid, it wouldn't improve by replacing the switch

Probably a starter issue. Sounds like the bendix isnt engaging and when it does its turning too slow. Wiggling the key is probably just a coincidence. I know its not much of an answer but hope it helps. Good Luck!!!
