    the length is 2x-1 when the width is x.

    x(2x-1)=21

    2x^2-x-21=0

    (2x-7)(x+3)=0

    x=3.5, -3 x has to be grater than 0. so the width is 3.5. the length is 2*3.5-1=6

    That means that the length can be expressed in terms of the width.

    Length = 2(width) - 1

    Area = length * width

    Area = (2(width) - 1)*width

    Area = 2w^2 - w (w = width)

    21 = 2w^2 - w

    2w^2 - w - 21 = 0

    (2w - 7)(w + 3) = 0

    w = 7/2 or -3

    Since the width cannot be negative, the width is 7/2 inches. The length is then 2(7/2) - 1, or 6 inches.

    Checking the answer, Area = length times width = 6 * 7/2 = 42/2 = 21.

    => length = 2x -1

    Area = len x width = 21

    => x(2x - 1) = 21

    => 2x^2 - x - 21 = 0

    => (2x - 7)(x + 3) = 0

    Because X needs to be positive here, from

    2x - 7 = 0, we get x = 3.5, which is the width.

    Hence, length = 2 x 3.5 - 1 = 6 inches.

    Let x = the width

    Then length = 2x-1

    Area= length times width = x(2x-1) = 2x^2 -x

    Therefore 2x^2 - x = 21

    2x^2-x-21=0

    (2x-7)( x+3) = 0

    x+3=0 so x= -3 and

    2x-7 = 0 so x= 7/2

    We reject x=-3 because we cannot have a negative width

    So x= 7/2 = 3.5 = width

    length = 2(7/2) -1 = 6

    assume widts = x inch

    then, you will get the length = 2x -1

    area = length x width = 21

    = (2x - 1)(x) = 21

    2x^2 - x = 21

    2x^2 - x -21 = 0

    factorize it, you will get

    (2x - 7)(x + 3) = 0

    2x - 7 = 0

    x = 3.5 inch

    length = 2x -1 = 7 - 1 = 6 inch

    the answer is 6 inch

    x cannot be - 3 inch because length always exist in positive value

    first you need to know the equation of the area of a rectangle = length*width (in the given the total area=21)

    in the given equation, it states that:

    width = x

    length = 2x-1

    now you can rewrite the equation:

    21=(2x-1)(x)

    now you solve for x and then you'll get the width.

    MAN THIS TOOK ME LIKE 10 MINS!!!! the 2 short sides are 3.8333333 inches, and the long sides are 6.66666666 in. the answer: 3.833333x 2= 7.666666-1=6.666666

    6.66666x 2= 13.32+7.66666666=REALLY CLOSE To 21. TRY IT!
