I am going to be there next month and want to make sure it is a safe neighborhood! How far is it from downtown?

Yes it's very safe, but it's also very big depending on what part of the North Hills you live in the commute to downtown Pittsburgh can range from 10 to 20 minutes. I'm sure you'll like it here in Pittsburgh and wish you everything well.
