Why are my daughter and I so tired?
I have been tired for most of my life. From Elementary school through University I have had serious problems getting to school on time no matter how much sleep I got. As an adult, I need 10 hours of sleep a night in order to function. I am not lazy, I eat a healthy diet, and I try to get some excersize every day.
My daughter, 4, is starting to show the same sleep problems that I have. Her teachers at preschool (manditory) often complain that she is exhaisted & sleeps all afternoon (head on her desk) 2 to 3 times a week. I give her vitamins, iron, and I put her to bed (lights out) at 8 pm. She has 11&1/2 hours of sleep each night and still can't make it through her day.
Is there a medical condition, possibly hereditary (my mom has a similar problem) that could explain why we are so tired all of the time? I have had problems with depression, on and off, for a long time but my 4 year old is not depressed, just tired.
This is a serious question. Serious answers only!

Sounds like you're doing everything right...if you've been incorporating this healthy routine for a while and still haven't seen improvements - I'd take you and your daughter to a doctor. Because I think it could be Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Be forewarned that many people with it are often told that their problems are "all in their head", so if you can, go to someone that you know has ample experience with CFS. Good luck.

I am a person that goes best on 10 hours of sleep. Can function on 9 for about 4 days. Or 8 hours for a day or two. In the end I need to catch up with a good 10 to 12 hour day.
I will say one thing though. Anxiety and depression will exhaust you. It will make you feel like you are 80...

While I can't speak of the medical perspective, I can speak from personal expereince. I have found if I get more than 8 hours of sleep, i am tired all day long. 7 hours leaves me feeling energetic.
Too much sleep can have the same effect as not enough. Also I have known people who function quite well on 5 hours of sleep, bbut they break it up into (2) 2.5 hour power naps about 10 hours apart, and that is all the rest they get

You may have hypothyroidism. Meaning your endocrine system puts out less than normal amounts of horomones that regulate your metabolism/energy level. People who are lively and energetic are often hyperthyroid.
You should see your doctor about it and he will probably refer you to an endocrinologist. Your answer could just be in a daily pill to supplement your low level of horomones. Luckily the treatment has been around for a long time so there are generic pills too!
My fiance was hyperthyroid but it was a result of her having a thyroid cancer which made her thryroid make more hormones.

I'm not in the medical profession, but something you can try, Are you getting too much sleep. Your body might be exhausted by sleeping too much. It may not help, but there are times, it seems like I'm dragging butt. It seems that when I go to bed early and get more than appr. 8 hrs sleep, I wake up feeling more tired than when I went to bed. I am the most active, when I get between 6-7 hours sleep at night. (sometimes much less) and I'm not as near tired......Its something that wouldn't hurt to try for a little while.

i have the same problems, i am tired no matter how much sleep i get...i can sleep 10 to 12 hours a night and still wake up and barely hold my eyes open...i was told to go and get check to see if i was diabetic, so i did...the results came back that i was not diabetic...also had my tyhroid check and it came back ok...but those two things are hereditary....i still havent found out what my problem is but i also dont have insurance right now....so im just trying to tough it out, till i can afford to go back for more testing

I think you could have any of of numerous conditions.....iron deficiency, a mineral deficiency ( i remember feeling SO fatigued when my potassium level was low), thryorid ( that made me SOOO tired i had the hardest time getting out of bed, and was VERY sleepy within a few hours!)....but it's hard to tell if we're not your physician...i think you should go to the doctors and ask for a whole series of blood test to be done. iron, minerals, thyroid (it REALLY messes you up), all the works! Good luck and i hope you get better!

I would go and have a sleep study done. They have clinics where they monitor your sleep and see what they can do to change the patterns. I often wonder if I have a sleeping disorder since I have a tough time getting to sleep and waking in the Am. I am always tired. I chalk it up to my kids and working but then it could be something else.

As someone who has hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's disease), the first thing I would suggest is that you go to a doctor and have a simple blood test to see if your thyroid levels are normal. I spend years dragging myself around in utter total fatigue, only to find that my thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormone, which means I have a very low metabolism. Thyroid problems are quite common, and very often have a genetic component.
