I love McManis Petite Sirah...it's delish! You can usually find it at BevMo. Or Joel Gott Syrah 2005.
You can check out this guy's site, he rates wine all the time. I don't always agree with him, but he's honest at least.
Have fun tasting wines...it's a great time!

There are tons that I love in that price range... but my favorite and why?
David Bruce Petite Syrah - because the first time I had it, I was on a very special weekend trip with a man I loved very much... it was a Valentine's Day trip... a wine tasting dinner at a Bed and Breakfast... and it was not only a marvelous trip, but it was truly the first time I noticed the magical thing that the properly matched wine and food can do for each other in your mouth.
This wine was served with a piece of beef in a cracked black pepper sauce... and the pepper in the beef pulled out the peppery notes in the wine and I was hooked on matching food to wine after that! (It was also the first time I'd seen the classic film Casablanca... but we won't go there - lol)

For cheap, quality reds you really can't ignore the Australians. They have had such a bumper-crop of grapes over the past few years that the supply has way outpaced the demand.
Personally, I prefer "The Little Penguin" merlot (~$6). Medium-dry without the "woody" flavor of many merlots.
If Napa Valley is your thing, "Barefoot" makes a merlot and a Cab-Sav for around $5. Both are great values.
I would shy away from Yellow Tail and Woodbridge. Both have had consistency problems.

Carlo Rossi Chianti. 5 liters for $9.95! Tastes great and is low in sulfides so you don't get hung over or headachey like other reds.
