Okay, so I'm going to Australia in july, and I was wondering what hte best appropriate type of clothing would be for an 18 day trip.

A lot depends on what part of Australia you're going to. Last time I was in Sydney at that time of year (same as January in the US), I was pretty cold, so if I were you I'd be looking into packable things that have long sleeves and layer well. Since it's such a long visit (lucky you), you might try to find clothing that can serve several purposes, like a black skirt you can wear with a sweater by day and dress up with a more formal top for evening. If you choose a color scheme for your trip, you can look very different day after day with relatively little to carry (e.g. black skirt, black pants, jeans, tights, boots, walking shoes, dress shoes, and then a variety of different colored shirts, sweaters, and scarves). Take some comfortable walking shoes - there's a lot to see, and a light weight raincoat, just in case. Hope you have a good time!

July is mid-winter in Oz, remember, and if you are going to be near the coast it can seem quite chilly after sundown. There won't be any snow, though!
