I studied abroad there last semester. It was certainly different from the USA. The pace of life is much slower and laid-back. People, in general, don't work long hours and going out at night is huge. Greeks seem to love the nightlife, clubbing, going to bars, etc. My impression was that many Greeks really want to imitate the culture of wealthier western European countries and, thus, they dress in extremely trendy clothing, act pretentious etc. I was surprised that people were not very friendly, although I'm sure most are sick of tourists, so I guess it makes sense. In general, a lot of Greeks seem to enjoy sitting around at outdoor cafes, smoking, trying to look cool and chic. A good portion of Greek life is just that...putting up the impression that you're cool.
