What will it take for the US to drop its "two party system" mentality?

Based on the way our government is structured, we will never drop the "two party system" because that is the only way either party has a chance. Parties may come and go, or change their positions completely, but we will never have parties A, B, & C, except during the few years of transition from A & B to A & C.

it would take a majority of voters failing to understand the value of an adversarial system. it would also require many people to fail to understand that all voters are either conservative or liberal, that it is just a matter of degrees.
