I service laptops and to replace the screen the hard drive is not touched all you do is und a few screws underneath the laptop, undo the bit under the screen where the pwr button is and take that off, disconnect the wires and maybe also pull out the palm rest where your touch pad mouse is and then pull out the keboard, then you can disconnect the screen from the motherboard of the laptop and slide it off the hinges and then slide the new 1 in to place and put it all back together.........EASY!
That process doesnt apply to all laptops as they are all different

They will have to open the case of your keyboard in order to take your old screen out, as well disconnect as the cables to your graphics card i believe, I haven't opened the case of my laptop before because i still have the manufactures warranty so I'm unsure if they will need to disconnect those cables, but I would imagine that they would need to disconnect some cables. Before you drop off your computer, make sure you read all of the fine print before you sign anything. I know that there are websites on the net that will repair your screen for you -- i haven't personally had the experience of replacing a screen. If it is just a dead pixel, they should be able to fix it -- this may be a more cost effective to replacing the entire screen. As well, make sure that you shop around if possible for prices and contact previous customers to as for their opinion.
