I think he has received mixed signals or confused some of the signals and feels that he can proceed .. best thing is to put a stop to his wants right at the beginning ... Its a no go and leave it like it is.

Not at all! males also have female friends! Not all men really needed only male friends. That is gender discrimination already. You just misinterpreted him. Or you might just have met him and you want to be instantly become close to him that is a problem you know. Men enjoy being with other guys because they enjoy things together and their passion meets. Say for example their passion for basketball and soccer or online video games. Or they are both a fan or an admirer for one common thing usually girls. That is why they are close but it doesn't meant that he had to befriend only those of the same gender. Maybe you just don't have something in common or you are both exact opposites or what. Ask youself.

Why don't you reserxh his likes and try to support them and like them as well. THEN talk to him about that. You might attract his attention and eventually as you keep doing that you'll bring yourself closer to him. You see... You need to have an effort to bfriend someone and be close to him.
