Why do people go funny when they know a person is brighter than themselves?

I ask a simple question about my record and do they go mad and a bit odd.

It's a defense mechanism. People don't like to feel or think that they are dumb or have less intellectual capacity than others.

I also hold the conviction that we are all guilty of employing this defense mechanism, when we meet someone smarter than we. It's a part of our self-preservation instinct.

This might also be why geeks/nerds are ostracized in high school. Others may see them as intellectually superior and will refuse communion with them in any form, in order to protect their mental schema of their self identity.

Perhaps the person in question esteems them self higher than they really are.
