I have recently been finding white flakes in my cats fur...all along his back. I am not sure what it is...could it just be dry skin?

The cold winter months can dry out your cats skin. This is more than likey just a case of dry skin. Just to be safe, take a closer look (at the skin, not the flake) and make sure it isnt red and irritated...that would mean a skin allergy or disease.
To take care of the dry skin, I suggest brushing or rubbing the area to bring out the natural oils in the skin. You could also get mineral oil on a cotton ball and rub that on the cats skin. This should relieve the itchyness of the dry skin and keep it moist.

It is dandruff and dry skin. My reason is its winter everyone gets dry skin. Even animals. It could be dry skin too because the cat might be dirty. You need to clean your cat sometimes. If your cat does not like water. Get dry shampoo. We use it. It works. Need more help Email me.

Usually it is indicative of dry skin. Changing to a different brand of cat food and/or adding a supplement such as Linatone will often clear it up.

Likely dandruff, but it can also be an indication of diabetes. I work for the SPCA, and this is common among overweight cats who turn out to be diabetic. If you care a lot for your cat, you may want to consider getting him tested for diabetes. If not, try chaning his food to low sugar (ask your vet).

There are a lot of good suggestions here. You could try some of them. You could also try to comb the cat more. That dry skin can itch and when you comb it, it feels just like a good back scratch.

Cats get dry skin just like people. You can see it better on cats with dark fur, but they all get it. My vet said that it happens mostly to older cats. If you are feeding your cat dry food, try adding some canned food. That will help. We tried vitamins and special oil, but it didn't do much good. They like sardines alot, and sardines have good fish oils in them, but not too much or you get a cat with really bad gas. They make canned sardines for cats. They have them in the cat food aisle with the treats.
