The first American pioneers crossed the Appalachians only to find that the French got there first. Daniel was credited with noting the prior tenants and remarking that he was gonna keep on a'goin, possibly making him the one you are talking about. The true American western pioneers were the mountain men--like Jim Bridger
and Jeremiah Johnson. These were the ones who put the Eastern states behind them, and blazed trail to the Rockies. I hope this helps. B.
