When my father worked at a gas station in the late 60s, he said that it used to be 10 to 12 cents a gallon. The cheapest price that I remember was 98 cents a gallon. That was about 8 years ago. Right now, 3 bucks would be heaven. I guess people up in Minnesota don't have it too bad though - gas here is about $3.80 a gallon.

There is a filling station near the Deleware Water Gap that dropped the price to .16 whenever there was a gas war going on.

The owner said that instead of coming down a penny at a time, he went immediately to .16. His supply company would take a cut too in order to now be undersold.

After the gas war ended, the price went back up to about .40 at that time, late 50's.

When I was a kid in the early 1970s, I remember seeing signs at 49 cents/gallon. This was "full service" too, where two guys wearing uniforms would run out, wash your windows, check the oil, and the tire air pressure.

While we waited, sometimes my father would by my brothers and I each a bottle of Coke from the old fashioned vending machines. The cost? 25 cents.

I honestly remember the day my dad stopped at a gas station in Vegas (we were moving to California) in 1966, and he started complaining because the gas cost $0.50 per gallon -- it was the highest price he'd ever seen.

    I was 6 :)

I can't remember the specific price but I do remember my mom complaining when gas went up to $1.00/gallon. Too bad the prices will only get worse.
