sick mini dashound?
i have a 15 year old mini dashound and she has what all old dogs get: bad breath. a few months ago i brought her to the vet to get her teeth cleaned. the vet found her heart enlarged, and she prolonged the cleaning and put my dog on a bunch of medicine. lately her breath is much worse and her heart is still inlarged. i don't know what i should do, and i would love any advice, thanks!

You really won't be able to let your dog undergo surgery with a heart issue like that. Your vet knows that it is more likely she will not survive the anesthesia. If you can't have the teeth cleaned, try Greenies or Dentabones. This may be your best option to at least try.

Her breath is going to stay bad because it's probably her teeth that are making it that way. Unfortunately, it can be the dental problems that are causing the heart ailment, a vicious cycle.
She can't be put under anesthesia because of the heart ailment. What did the doctor say regarding the prognosis?
Unfortunately I have had two cats with cardiomyopathy and they both passed away from it. I know that cardiomyopathy is an enlargement of the heart, I don't know if your dog has the same thing or not though.
Call the vet and speak to them regarding the prognosis and treatment options available. It will be ultimately up to you regarding whether the quality of your dogs life will be ok if you give her more quantity...speak to the vet.

Humans might not like or agree with our Dr.'s, and some vets don't meet what we think are our expectations!
Change Vets! Call around, it took us several visits to several vets before we found one we ALL could agree on.
If I were you I would call Texas A&M and ask what they would recommend!
Like a human an enlarged heart can be a dangerous thing if not treated properly!

it might be safe to start thinking about possibly taking her to the vet for more frequent checkups. if the heart is still enlarged, this may be a livable disease and let her live to her fullest extent. if the vet says that this might cause problems later on, it might be time to start thinking about putting her to sleep (unfortunatley).
i am not a vet (or anything close) so this is just based upon opinion. take it if you will. i make no 100% guarantees on the information i have given.

It is actually spelled Dachshund. If you are unsure about the diagnosis I would recommend going to another vet and getting a second opinion.
Bad breath is typically due to plaque or rotting teeth. If she can't handle having them worked on, maybe it is time to look at putting her down (so sad, i understand-i have one of my own). She can't live with miserable teeth and her heart can't take having them worked on...

Theres alot of motives your dogs might want to be doing this: Copying the mummy from at the same time as it change right into a puppy, no longer digesting its nutrition each of how, or perhaps it change into the terrific littermate at the same time as it change into nonetheless with its mom. yet theres an undemanding thanks to guard it; positioned a smal quantity of pineapple contained in the dogs nutrition, it makes the poop have a foul style. My mini doxie did the same element and the pineapple trick works!

Give her breath cleaning treats from your local store and just love her. She's been there for you for 15 years just be there for her and make sure she is in no pain and is happy. I'm sure if she could talk she'de say your breath hasn't always smelled like roses...lol. I wish you both well.
