Where did the saying "CHOMPING AT THE BIT" originate?

    this chomping at the bit is a horse term. when the horse chews or chomps on the bit it means he is getting bored and wants to move not just stand there.

    when a horse is on the bit he is very responce to slight movement of the riens

    i agree with the horse chomping his bit, but also in the western days--if u were to get a tooth pulled, or a bullet dug out of your body. the lack of deading medication, the patient at to bite down on something (like a bit) to help deal with the pain.
