What does a best man give as a gift for the wedding and how much should i spend?

Get them both a nice pen and paper. Have them write down why they are getting married to each other cuz in a few years they can have references

Even with the money that the best man spends on the attire and the bachelor party, a gift is still expected. However, around $50 should suffice. I would go with something personal as you are the one he is closest to. If you are a friend of the couple it can be a "couples" gift. If not, you can give him cash or something you know that he will use. Congratulations on being a good friend!
