It really depends on the surgery and type of anesthesia they need to use for that surgery. My last surgery was 2 years ago to remove my thyroid, they used a very deep anesthesia so not a muscle or nerve would move causing damage to my throat or vocal cords etc. I didn't know it at the time but it was the first time I vomited and the nurse told me it was the anesthesia and the morphine. I didn't need the morphine so I didn't use the pump and the nausea went away. My headache from the surgery before was from vicodine- I now just ask for plain Tylenol, I rather deal with the small discomfort than vomit or get that nasty headache. Good Luck, but sometimes we don't have a choose, just ask that they don't give you morphine or vicodine if you react the same way I do.

Be sure and tell your anesthetist about your past experiences during your preoperative interview. He/She can look at what type of anesthesia you got last time and either choose something different or supplement it with an effective anti-nausea medication.

Also, be sure and ask your surgeon to put an anti-nausea medication order included on your chart...just in case. That way if you need it, you won't have to wait while the staff gets hold of him.

You'll be on clear liquids for at least a few hours after the surgery. Have your family bring in some ginger ale for you to sip on once you are being allowed liquids. Many people find that helpful for nausea. You might want to have them to go ahead an open a couple of cans so that it can lose some of its fizz.

    Good luck to you.

Be sure to tell your anesthesiologist, not just your doctor, about the nausea, headache and vomiting. He should be meeting with you right before your surgery to talk with you.

Don't eat any solid foods the day before. Just drink water. I found eating gives headaches and makes you feel like dodo.

You may be allergic to the anesthetic (sp?). Talk to your doctor and maybe he/she can can find out with tests before your surgery. Good luck!!
