Can you become lactose intolerant as an adult?

Update:

Probably silly but does this mean I can't eat chocolate stuff ... Like candies & what not?

How would you know you're intolerant w/o seeing a doctor ($)?

You can become...its got to do with the gene switching on and off haha....it is genetic btw..

How to tell? If you get stomach pains from about 1 to 2 hrs after eating dairy, then your stomach will feel bloated and gassy. Then the last symptom is diarrhoea. If you get all three after dairy over and over again then you probably are lactose intolerant.

I think that's when most people become lactose intolerant. Our bodies aren't designed to consume milk after early childhood (when we get our nutrients from breast milk), so the human body, "lactose intolerant" or not, doesn't actually digest most of the nutrients in cows milk (yogurt and cheese are a little better because they are, in effect, already partially digested). I'm in my mid-twenties and I haven't had any problems, but a lot of my friends are just now starting to develop intolerance to large quantities of dairy. My mom is in her fifties and recently switched completely to soy milk because her body was having trouble with regular milk. You can become lactose intolerant at any age, but it seems to become more likely as you get older.

Yes you can. As one ages the body ages to as well all know and also goes through changes. When I was younger as a teenager and so on, I was able to drink milk, eat dairy products and such. Now that I'm my late 20's I can't enjoy the dairy products anymore.

    I guess so.

Lactose intolerance isn't that common in American kids, but about a quarter of adults are that way.

Yes, and that applies to anything. You can have something everyday of your life but once your body says no, then that is it. Funny how that can happen, isnt it?
