How did you get over a pet's loss?

I've lost a few pets in my lifetime, and because I have a couple at once, there will be more. But most of them have died naturally or in their sleep.

But 2 years ago, I was taking my whitelab/pomeranian [haha the male was a pom, he's got courage lol] to the vet, I'd let him ride in the back of the truck bed, I tied him to the tool box so he couldn't jump out. Well, I had to use a tad bit longer leash and I was going down the road .. he jumped out .. but I didn't know it until a mile down the road, I realize I hadn't seen him pop up over the toolbox for awhile. It was the most horrific thing I've ever seen in my life and I just broke down and cried right there in the middle of the road. My neighbor happened to go by and noticed me holding him, he's a rancher and he said he probabaly didn't feel a thing and pointed out that his neck was broken. Since then I rarely put an animal in the bed of the truck , even if I'm willing to hold them. I even put my lamb in the cab from then on.

Oh that is such a sad story, really I feel so bad for you.

I had my dog for 18 years she died a very old lady 3 years ago. I was devastated, I'm afraid I don't really have any advice. I got a new puppy 16 months ago and it's great having a dog again but she'll never be my first best friend.

Anyway I just wanted to say I'm sorry.

Wow, I am sooo sorry that happened. Ive heard alot of stories about that. I'm still trying to get over the lose of an animal as well. It wasnt mine, but I felt responisble for its death. My friend had a rabbit, and put it outside in its new enclosure to run around, and the dog got in and injured its hind leg. It was shaking and in shock, and we all thought it was going to be alright, but it just died peacefully on its way to the vet. I can completely understand the feelings of blame you put yourself under. You feel as though you did something wrong. But in truth even if you had seen your dog fall out, I doubt you would have been able to do anything, mainly because it probably died instantly right after it jumped. I feel your grief though, if I had anything ever happen like that, I'd be sick with myself for weeks. I hope this helped somewhat.

That's terrible. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had a cat that I had for close to seven years. She was an outdoor cat, and generally only drank the milk we would leave out for her. At the time, we also lived right next to a freeway. One morning, she didn't come back from her hunting. I slept by the back door for two days, waiting for her to come back. But she wouldn't. I just had to come to grips, that she was a living creature, as capable of death as I am. It also didn't help that about this time, I lost a brother. I was so miserable until someone gave me a stuffed animal that looked just like her. Having something that resembled her, comforted me.

I know you may not be able to find something like that. The best advice I can offer is to always remember him in your heart. But don't let his loss take control of your life. Life comes and goes every day.

I'm so sorry! That's terrible! I guess it just takes time to get over any loss, really. I worry a lot about this (getting over a loss)!! I have two old dogs (13 and 14) and I fear the day one dies because the other won't be far behind. They've been together almost all of their lives. Just the thought of it breaks my heart. I have, though, lost dogs over the years. Two had to be put to sleep (my parents did this). The saddest was my year-old Great Dane mix who used to get out of my yard when I wasn't home. One day I came home and he was gone. My neighbor said she saw an Animal control truck going after him, so I called and they told me he was brought in dead. I was stunned and totally devastated. It took a long time to get over that one!!

Time usually heals, but when there's a feeling of guilt involved, as you seem to imply that you feel, you might never get over that feeling, maybe professional help would get you over the guilt.

It must have been horrible for you....prayers to you.

Intoxication and lots of it. Well I'll opt to trying that since my kitten ran outside yesterday and we can't find it and I'm depressed and going crazy because he's my baby my son my angel my everything. I miss him more than the person that let him outside accidently. Sniffles.

  • That is an old story. Your supposed to say there were claw marks in the side of the bed where it held on for a couple of miles.
