Bad areas: You want to stay away from south Phoenix. It definitely has the highest crime rate. Glendale/West Phoenix is also very bad. Most of Phoenix has high property crime rates, but not high rates of violent crimes. However, in south Phoenix and in parts of Glendale, there are more violent crimes like murder, gang-related crimes, etc. Central Phoenix near the I-17 is also bad. And the downtown area also has a lot of crime. Notice that the guy below that moved to Austin lived near the I-17. And then claimed he didn't live in a bad neighborhood. Everyone in Phoenix knows, anything close to the 17 is a BAD neighborhood! Shell out a few more dollars and move east or north!
Good areas: North Scottsdale is the best area, coincidentally the most expensive! Scottsdale in general has little crime, though south Scottsdale around McDowell does have a fairly high crime rate. Tempe is pretty nice with generally little crime. North Phoenix and north central Phoenix are also good. East Phoenix has a lot of very nice neighborhoods, low crime, expensive.
Generally speaking, in Phoenix you want to be north or east, not south or west.

Actually Ahwatukee has the lowest overall crime rates but that is because it is also more expensive. Answer 1 is pretty much spot on. The metrocenter area (I-17) is awful, full of noisy students and homeless people..lots of violent crime and also the highest rate of car theft in the whole state. South Phx/ Laveen are also bad, yeah there are a lot of nice new homes being built but the surrounding area is still very bad. So where do you think those people go to commit crimes. Mesa/Tempe/ Chandler all depend on the particular part of the city. Some nice older neighborhoods tucked away in the the Central area still too if you can find them. West Phx...lots of illegals and related crime, if you don't speak Spanish you won't survive here. Sun City is a retirement community (you have to be over 55 to live there and they compain if your grandkids visit). Unfortunately, this is a big city and not too many truly safe areas left. You can actually see crime stats mapped on the Police websites and crime rates at local schools on:

I disagree. I lived there 10 years ago and found they had the best community college system I have ever seen. Arizona State Univ. in Tempe is excellent for Architecture. The crime rate is bad in some areas west of Phoenix and South Phoenix. I lived in Scottsdale and liked it. The rentals cost half of what they did in California. You can live in a smaller city like Flagstaff but you may not find a job. Phoenix is big and has more jobs.

ALWAYS stay away from the downtown area of Phoenix. I am terrified to even drive through there much less stop. South Phoenix can get pretty bad, but once you get to the Awatukee Foothills area, its not too bad. Guadalupe- bad part of town. People say they are renovating it, but it hasn't got any better. I would also say avoid central Phoenix, it is really getting bad too. It wasn't that bad when I lived around there a while ago, but its gotten bad. There are parts of Glendale that are bad, definitely avoid from Thomas to Glendale ave on all the avenues, very scary.
Good areas- Scottsdale, most of it is nice, but the Tempe Scottsdale mesa corner can get pretty dangerous. Gilbert is beautiful, still a farm area, so cow poo smell is a given. Mesa can be nice, avoid central Mesa around Main street. Go more towards the mountains, but don't pass the mountains and go to Apache Junction, you may never get out. Litchfield Park is small and pretty. HUGE houses! Depending on age, Sun City and Sun City West are pretty good. But Sun City West is in the middle of no where. Chandler is also very nice, but so so expensive. Paradise Valley is nice too, its pretty much like Scottsdale, they just wanted their own name.

Just moved from Phoenix to Austin, TX. We lived west of the I-17 on Peoria by Metrocenter. Crime wasn't too bad, but from all I could tell the whole time we lived there, crime is high in Phoenix period. You take your chances. North, south, east, west....no place in Phoenix seemed safe enough for us, that's why we moved to another city, which is smaller and with way safer crime statistics. I got tired of the creepy homeless people begging for money in parking lots and afraid our cars would be stolen like people we knew. We didn't live in a horrible section of town but something was always going on. If we had of known better we would have lived in Tempe or north part of Glendale/Peoria. Scottsdale is good but too expensive for regular people. I think anything with a Phoenix address should be avoided.
Best of luck.

Actually south Phoenix has undergone an unbelivable amount of transformation. The city condemed a lot of land and sold it to developers on the cheap. It's the fastest growing area in metro phoenix. All along baseline everything is new, and now it's moving north to southern and broadway.
