Do you have your OS installation CD? If yes, place it in your CDROM drive and reboot. When the PC reopens and prompts you to boot from CD, press any key.
READ, then Follow the command prompts carefully. Choose the "REPAIR installation" option.
My assumption here is that you are using a Windows OS.
If after running the repair option, the error still occurs: BACK UP your files. Then you may have to REFORMAT and REINSTALL - depending on how serious thye "damage" to your hard drive.
When in doubt, ask a more knowledgable friend to help you. There are a few other options available to IT pros like running FDISK.EXE, etc. Do run regular maintenance checks on your system. PC's, like cars, need tune-ups, too.

When you start your PC , then after showing the boot screen, press
F8 button and select "safe mode".Enter your OS , then first try to install directX and restart your PC into normal mode . Or, after entering safe mode , insert your OS installation disk and select "upgrade" ( just reinstall it). If can not follow any one of above two, then insert the OS installation disk and restart PC. Boot PC from CD, and select recover and follow the instructions ...
Or, the most worst case, reformat the partition and install a fresh OS.
Best of luck......

Only guess, and that what it is, is to reboot while tapping the F8 key. If it works you will get a screen with options, choose, start up using the last known good configuration. Best of luck.
