What is the difference between a street and an avenue?

Why are some address say Pine street while other are like Oak Avenue? What is the criteria?

    Avenues run north and south, while streets run east and west. At least that's the case here. Hope this clears it up. I guess if all "roads" were called street or avenue with no alternate name, it would become too repetitious on the language. I never came up with anything more logical.

    "Oxford Dictonary of Current English, Third Edition defines "street" and "avenue" this way: Street- "A public road in a city, town, or village." Avenue- "A broad road or path." A "street" is more complex.
