The "Greater Good"; a matter of opinion?

What is the "Greater Good", how can it be good? Why is it used as a excuse...it's a matter of opinion, right?

Choosing the best alternative for the best result.

Opinion does not matter. One solution, action,

is better than another and is chosen, selected, for the "geater good."

If "opinion" is relevant, then it is a much different question.

The greater good means that a small sacrifice is beneficial for the majority. Here's an example: You own a company. You need to get rid of a department to come up in the black. You have to get rid of them "for the greater good" because if you don't all your employees may have to find other jobs because you'll go bankrupt. The greater good means that you have to let go of a small piece for the bigger picture... get it?

Not at all. I wont say its opinion, if you were to kill someone anonymously to save everyone in the world, am sure many will do it, hence for the greater good.

A choice between two options but one exceedingly beneficial in comparison to input,(can even be an evil act) thats just my little defn.

Some people say this in hypothetical like "if this was for the greater good, then I'd . . ." Some people like those more fortunate than others just say this so they wouldn't have to follow through on what they say.

uhhh.... guess it's just a way of saying it is better than good? Like if you want a piece of chocolate, I won't give you a bar of chocolate but give you a mars bar...
