There are many different types of penguins. There are a number of species that do live in warmer climates. In fact Ecuador has a species of penguin and its on the Ecuator.
There are species of penguins that do migrate by swimming great distances. Magellenic and Rockhopper Penguins in the Faukland islands both migrate. Magenellics have been monitored swimming over 1,200 miles each winter.
Different kinds of life have evolved to live in different areas. They are adapted to live there and would not do well elsewhere.

Ya know, I saw the movie "March of the Penguins" and I thought the same thing. I would never live in that climate, but they are penguins, and their life cycle depends on that cold. Part of the evolutionary process.
Besides, I don't think the commute would be easy for them...they don't fly.

Generally larger penguins retain heat better, and thus inhabit colder regions, while smaller penguins are found in temperate or even tropical climates.
