Anyone ever hear of "shaped notes?"?

I went on a church trip with my father's senior class, and they were talking about reading music that was written in shaped notes. I play piano, and have been involved in music for years, and have never heard of it. Anyone have any idea what they are talking about?

Yes. Shaped-note or sacred harp singing is done with people sitting in a square, facing each other and singing loudly in their distinct parts (tenors, altos, etc.). The notes are fa-so-la. The notes have distinct shapes to them (diamonds, squares, etc.); hence shape-note singing. This was an early form of music in colonial America with teachers traveling from the north to the south to teach people how to sing. It doesn't have a particular religious tradition, but the songs are mostly religious songs. You could probably do a google search and find a group near you. Hope that helps.
