How do you do a 50 foot backup on the side of the road w/out hitting curb?

I am going for my drivers test in a few days and am so nervous. On thing that they make you do is pull over on the side of the road and back up for 50 feet, but many people fail on this because they either hit the curb or go back into the road. Please Help!!

Any other tips would be great too!!

This is easy -- park next to the curb, get out and see how close you are. Then get back into the driver's seat -- and visually look over your shoulder and see where the curb is as you are looking out your rear window -- and have your passenger put a piece of blue painter's tape on the point.

NOW ... knowing this is your visual cue ... start practicing this backing up ... keeping your car in line created by the edge of the curb and the mark you made -- and you will find that you can follow the curb just fine withOUT hitting it!

Do this several times now -- and keep practicing until you feel comfortable enough to know where this spot is without the visual cue.

Then remove the visual cue, but now direct your eyes to the spot and keep it in view as you are backing up.

Source(s): I did this with my own son -- had him practice his left turns and right turns on the Night before the Trash Pickup -- because most people put their Rolling Bins streetside the night before .. and they are GOOD VISUAL CUES to keep you on track and away from the danger areas. After this practice, and showing him how I do it with the Visual Cues -- he practiced the Visual Cues and then was able to pass the test the next day.

Make sure your right mirror is adjusted so that you can see the curb clearly in it. Practice it at home. And make sure the wheels are straight when you begin to back up. You kinda need to let the car do the rest.

I'm taking my test in like a week too lol.

    Eyes. Outside mirror. Steering wheel.

    First -- go SLOW.

I always look in my side view mirror at the edge of the road, and keep it aligned as I'm going back, instead of twisting my body.
