Automatic headlights won't turn off?

I have a 1999 Chevy Malibu with automatic headlights that come on by themselves when it gets dark, even if the headlight knob is turned to the off position. That's okay, except I want to go to one of those Christmas light shows in a city park and they ask you to go through with only parking lights on. I checked the owners manual and all it told me was how to idle with parking lights - you have to have the parking brake set. I can't figure out any way to drive through that light show without my headlights. Can anyone help me?

Unless your vehicle has a malfunction, you should be able to turn the headlamp switch to the parking lamp position (not headlamp) and it should kill the headlamps, leaving only the parking lamps on, even at night. If this doesn't work, you might try setting the park brake to the first click. OR, and this kinda bites, you could place a small flash light or lamp operated off the cigarette lighter facing onto the small black light sensor located on the dash, and maybe put a small towel around it (to avoid it being annoying). This would trick the car into daylight mode, and cause the DRLS to activate, which should let you use the parking position on the switch to kill the headlamps. If all this fails, you can pop the hood, and remove the relay (small gray rectangular) for the headlamps, called "Headlamp Relay." It's located in the electrical center under the hood, along with all the fuses. You might need pliers to remove it.

Sorry to hear you are having a concern with your 2007 Dodge Charger SXT. I checked for Technical Service Bulletins but could not find anything related to the headlights turning off as you described. You may want to consider having the vehicle diagnosed by your local authorized Dodge Service Department or a trusted mechanic. Lisa Customer Care Chrysler Group LLC

there should be a fuse to pull either under the hood or in the car for your DRLs (daytime running lights) pull that fuse to turn them off. I' have also found on my 98 Lumina that if you turn the knob so that it is between the parking light indicator & headlight indicator your headlights will turn off leaving only your parking lights on.

Your car has day light sentinel lights.

You can try to set the parking brake one or two clicks. Just enough to fool the switch. You have to make sure there is no drag on your rear brakes. you should try this in your driveway.

simple. To the left of the steering wheel, there should be a Dome Override button. Press this button four times. your lights should now be completely controlled by the switch. You should hear a tone when it activates.
