    1. Keep your mouth shut and your eyes and ears wide open.

    2. Be punctual for all times - opening, appointments and other arrangements.

    3. Never criticise your line manager or others in authority especially in the presence and hearing of other staff members.

    4. Always try to be neat and tidy - both personally and in the work environment.

    5. If you are not happy in your work - look for alternative employment.

    6. Which should of course be number 1 - be honest in all matters and truthful to a fault.

    7. And again one of the most important - enjoy it...........

Your public school education has you very well-trained! "Avoid mistakes. Avoid wrong answers. Live in fear. Never innovate. Do not think for yourself."

Truth is, there is no way to do everything perfectly. It's an imperfect world! The job environment is what is left over for the people who are too scared to venture out and test their wings and fly. The job environment contains just enough reward to keep you from quitting, for the bare minimum the employer feels he or she should pay.

Check with someone before you do anything for the first couple of weeks. There will be lots of time to take on responsibility later. In fact, if the company doesn't give you one, make sure you find someone who'll agree to act as a mentor to you: show you the ropes, how they do things there, etc.

Be willing to help out with co-workers. Communicate with your boss and get clear expectations of what is expected of you and then deliver results. Don't get caught up in the office negativity. Support the company and your boss in public - they are providing your paycheck.

The best way not to make ANY mistakes, is just NOT to do ANYTHING. Accept that you will make mistakes, but try and limit that.

Ask what you must do and how you must do it.

All of us makes mistakes all the time.
