Does negative thinking lead to negative things happening?

I have to admit, I am a pessimist. I can’t help it…when bad things keep happening to you, you start thinking everything will turn out bad. My fiancé keeps telling me that the reason so many bad things happen is because I bring it on myself for being a pessimist. It’s not like I do it on purpose, like I said, I can’t help it. I am starting to get really depressed because of everything going on in my life that I am starting to think maybe if I change my thinking, my situation will change. Does positive thinking really work? How do I stop thinking so negative?

    It's true, positive thinking works. You can't force yourself to think positive if you are focusing on the negative. Truly thinking positive is an awareness. Once you realize that you can do it and the response you get is positive, you'll be able to pull out of this. It takes time and growth as well so it doesn't just happen overnight. This might be why you feel so depressed. It's a change that you have to make and true changes take time. So, how do you do this? Well, when you have a good moment in your day. Embrace it and talk about it with those around you. You will notice the response you get will be happy and positive. It does not have to be a really significant moment... just something that made you feel good. You'll notice the reaction you get back will be positive. Not only will the person be happy to see a smile on your face, but positive attitudes are contagious. The person might start to feel happy just because they are around someone who is happy. So, start out small. Talk about things that happen to you in your day that you enjoy. This little change is a start to positive thinking. Let me help get you started... you have a fiance! How exciting. I've had a boyfriend for 4 years and I can't wait until I call him my fiance. You are so lucky and good luck to you. Your positive experience has made me feel excited about pieces of my life. You see? Think about the parts of your life that are good .

    I am one of those that think that way too. The POSITIVE thing right now that you are doing is talking to other people about it. That is why I have gotten on here today. Negative does bring negative. I am working on me. I have slowly but surely feeling some changes. But don't give up. Someone else answered you with the fact that "it doesn't happen overnight" and it is very true but it feels good to know what the problem is and that you are now trying to work on it. And other things you could do if you haven't already, is check out some of the questions for problems other people are having and see if you can help them out with some experiences you may have had. You do have to remember to tell yourself "I'm not the only one." Good luck and don't give up.

    It is better put that negative talking brings about negative things happening. Speak positive and positive and positive things will happen.It is true! Look for the silver lining behind the cloudy sky! See the glass as half full and not half empty! Maybe you can find a group to join. Sometimes it helps to find a circle of peers who can give you feedback that can help you.Check to see if there are any groups in your area.

    How many times did you write "I can't help it"? Are you saying you have no control over what you decide to think in your own brain? You need to start counting your blessings and learn to see the joy in life. You DO do it on purpose because you 1-get attention, 2-have an excuse for your own failures and 3-don't have to take responsibility for yourself if you "can't help it".

    There are probably 1000 books you can read about positive thinking, being grateful, joyful living, etc. Take the initiative and go get a few.

    Read inspirational books; I am a Hypnotherapist with a Masters' in Psychology, I can tell you that the way a person thinks, greatly impact the way they live their lives, and the choices they make hour to hour, day to day. Indeed, begin to look into positive meditation books; they will help you to slowly begin to alter the way in which you habitually think. Take from a past pessimist. It will work!!!

    You might try attending a group therapy in cognitive thinking or seeing a counselor for assistance. If you dwell on the negatigve, you don't see the positive and the world can be a very depressing place. Don't let it get too bad. Seek help. It won't hurt and can help.

    i would like to believe in positive thinking brings positive things to you and i try it all the time. but i cant help it if one little thing goes wrong thinking "i knew i shouldnt of bothered its ****" lol than i think all negative again . but yes i do think it works and you should keep trying . im a big believer in kama what goes around comes .. you do good and good will come back!

    Yes. negativity begets negativity. You say that you can't help it but you can! Happiness is a choice. You have to choose to see the good in everything. But let me just say that Everyone has challenges in their life, it is your reaction to challenges that makes the difference!!!

    i dont even need to keep reading to tell you exactly what you need to do. remember you are right negativity spreads when you are negative the people around you are negative stay positive despite bad outcomings and usually goood things will happen when you think negative you tend to be negative
