Is it alright for my dog to drink water from our pool?
I have had several dogs and always given them fresh water to drink, but my Austrialian Shepherd prefers to drink from the pool, even though he has fresh water.
I just tested my tap water and my pool water with my pool testing kit. It turns out that my tap water has the same amount of Chlorine as my pool water! Wow, I guess we're all getting poisoned! They both came out in the mid-range.
Could someone else who has Chlorine in their tap water please do a test with their pool test kit. I am curious.

Haha you are right, we are all poisoned when we drink treated
tap water... It's not safe for them to drink from the pool, and if your tap is the same as the pool, either pool is high, or the tape should have a filter system on it.. You risk all sorts of health problems, cancers etc.

It's not going to hurt him if he does it every once in a while but long term, yes it can have adverse affects on your pooch. In humans, long term consumption of chlorinated water has been linked with an increase in the incidence of colon cancer. It's got something to do with the way the chlorine reacts with other things in your body to produce acids? Well that has been mentioned. Theoretically, your tap water and your pool water shouldn't have the same chlorine levels. If this were the case, there would be no need to chlorinate your pool as the amount of chlorine in your tap water would suffice to keep your pool squeaky clean and free of scum.

People are starting to buy chlorine filters for their taps - so please don't let poochie indulge in his pool water fetish too much!

No, do not let your dog drink from the pool. The chemicals in the pool water could make him sick. I wouldn't worry if he only drinks a little bit. Try to discourage him from drinking pool water by shaking a can of pennies or making a loud noise when you catch him drinking from the pool. Then take him to his bowl of fresh water and reward him with a treat for drinking from his bowl. Eventually he will realize he is supposed to drink from the water bowl and not the pool.

It's not really healthy and should be discouraged, but don't be too concerned. Unless he drinks a huge amount, it won't make him sick. Especially try to keep the dog away from the pool when it's been recently treated, because chlorine and other chemicals aren't good for him.

If your drinking water and pool water have the same concentration, something is wrong with your pool, or your tester isn't reading properly.
I wouldn't let my dog drink from the pool regularly. If you can't stop him from drinking from the pool, consider switching to a non-chemical purification system, like ozone or UV light.

no, chlorine and chemicals can hurt the dog. I have a black lab and she is tempted but I leave a bowl of water next to pool to prevent her from drinking it, but then again, dogs probably drink toilet water. yuk. just trying to help, chemicals are not good for people or dogs.....C. I have seen other dogs do that too... as long as there isn't too much chemicals in the pool he will be ok, just don't let his do it ALL the time or yes he could get sick.
