Potty chairs seem to work better. Kids who have their own special potty tend to be more excited about using it therefore potty train faster, at least from my experience.

Don't worry about starting when others started. It's different for each and every child. Some are ready at 2 yrs., some ready at 3. It's just a matter of training them when you feel they are ready. For instance, when they are old enough to tell you they went or need to go potty or when they are showing interest in using the potty like mom or dad.

As for how long it takes--again, it's different for everyone. Some kids get it in a few days, others take weeks.

Just remember to never push your child into potty training. That's the worst thing you could do.

I started out with the little potty chair sitting on the floor of the bathroom, because the little ones can just go right in and sit down and go potty without your help. Then as they get used to that, I changed to the potty seat that you put on the adult toilet, it helps them not fall in! Then eventually, they don't need anything but the adult toilet. I started when my daughter was 2 and when my son was 3. It depends on their understanding, maturity and their interest in potty training. Every child is different. The most important thing is to not make a big deal out of it if they don't want to or if they have an accident. I had a sticker chart for my kids, and everytime they "went potty", they got a sticker to put on their chart that was hung on the bathroom wall. You could try a variety of things to help them, but this seemed to work and you didn't have to give candy or treats all the time. It took my daughter no time at all and my son a few weeks to get the hang of it! Good Luck!

I generally start with a potty chair (with removable seat) then once the child gets used to the process and familiar with the potty chair, I move the potty chair seat onto the big toilet seat. Once the child gets used to this I remove the seat altogether and teach the boys to stand and the girls to sit on their own. I think the potty chair makes it much easier for the child to become independent faster. Some children are nervous about the big potty this eliminates that all together. Both my sons were potty trained at 1yr 8mo old it didn’t take more than 2wks. Of course at that age accidents did happen sometimes but only when they were sick or out of the home for extended periods. My daycare children usually take about 3wks to potty train. Spend a week on each step. Once at this stage you don’t see many accidents. Consistency at home and while with the caregiver is a must along with good communication with all involved! Most of all Encouragement!

We bought a potty seat when our son started paying attention to what we were doing in the bathroom. This was around 18 months. He has never, ever used it.

We went straight to the little seat that fits on the toilet (however you can buy a potty seat that turns into a step stool for about $15 at Target - he stands on it to pee). He's only two, and we're not pushing him, but he is way more into doing it the way mommy and daddy do.

I see a lot of answers here where kids were scared of the "big seat", but our son was actually more skeptical of the little one. Since the little seat for the toilet costs about $10, for a total of $25, you can see what they prefer.

I know so many people who tried to accelerate potty training and it backfired, so don't rush it!

both, i use a potty chair for when she has to ran to the bathroom and i am busy so she can go by herself, toilet seat at her grandmothers house because the toilet is low and she can jump on the toilet and with out the seat she would fall in. i started training her about 1 year ago when she was two she has go the hang of it now after 1 year but i put pull ups on her at night because she dont get up to potty at night, just in case so i dont have to change the sheets.

I used a potty chair for potty training both of my boy (15 & 10 now). My oldest only too a couple of weeks because he's extremely bright and independent. My youngest too a couple of years because he has such severe ADHD that the docs all thought he was Autistic but testing proved he isn't. I used a potty chair because toddlers have a hard time getting up on the toilet and I was afraid to use steps because I was afraid they'd fall.

I am still in the procees. My daughter just turned 2 in Nov., and I bought a potty chair because I tried using the toilet, but she would cry, I guess it's scary cause she doesn't want to fall in. But I have been trying for about 3weeks, I think she's getting there, almost. Good Luck with yours.

me or my children? My son was potty trained by 2 yrs old. I bought the potty chair but he didn't like it. He used the regular toilet.. i just had to sit him on it. Oh and it took about a week to get the hang of it. I just eliminated diapers cold turkey. He didnt like the feeling of wet clothes.

the potty chair kids feel more confident and secure because they are at floor level and on the toilet seat they feel scared to fall in and get flushed away or full off and get hurt

Introduce them to both... the big toilet can be pretty scary, so the more you introduce it the better.

When they're really little start introducing them to the idea of sitting on the potty... even without a diaper. My sister tried it with her 11 month old, and she went. But she's almost two and still in diapers.

Make it fun until you know your child is ready... give lots of praise!! And lots of patience.

Every kid is different... I've heard of one year olds being trained, and I've heard of three year olds still wearing diapers... there is no 'right ' way or age.
