    My favorite Japanese restaurant IS expensive - but the food is incredible! If you go during lunch - 11:30 to 2:00 - they do serve lunch specials - $16 to $25 sushi and sashimi platters. They are located at 7 East 47th Street - upstairs - and you MUST have a reservation (this may not be in the price range you are looking for, but keep it in mind - it's wonderful!);

    I also like Ise on West 56th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenue - excellent food - I love the deep fried oyster appetizer;

    Mikata, a downtown restaurant on Centre Street and Walker -

    reasonably priced, fresh, nice service. A great appetizer is a mixed seafood and vegetables with vinegar. At dinner, they serve a complete dinner for $28 - that consists of soup; salad,; an appetizer (either California rolls or shumai) ; an entree of lobster tail teriyaki (this is really, really good) served with your choice of tuna, shrimp, steak or chicken); dessert (I like the ginger ice cream); and tea. Excellent value!

    Have a wonderful time at whatever restaurant you choose.
