What is leather made up of?

Animal hide after its been tanned. Tanning in this context is the process in which animal skin is treated with an acidic chemical compound to prevent decomposition along with leaving a desired color.

Leather is from cow hides. There several chemicals used to "flesh" the hide, Most of which are trade secreted. There many ways in which the hide becomes shoes and belt and such, most are trade secreted.

It's animal skin, you could make leather from your own skin. So it's basically skin without the moisture.
