Anytime I want to defrag my hard drive to check the hard drive for errors, I will go into safe mode. While your computer is booting up, hit F8. Less start up programs will be running to help it run smoother. Anytime you do a disk error check, most likely you'll be asked to reboot. I usually got to 'My Computer' and right click on the 'C Drive' and go to 'Properties'. Click on the 'Tools' tab and click on 'Check Now'.

If you want to run scandisk on your computer having windows xp, then open start > my computer. where you see the Hard disk drives.
right click on a partition, say C,
then select properties from the popup menu.
Click on Tools panel.
Under Error checking click the button "check now"
Select both the check disk options.
Click on start.
The computer will display a message that it can not run scandisk now, and it will schedule it at next startup. Press ok.
Now repeat the above procedure to schedule scandisk for other partitions.
Now reboot the computer. Scandisk will automatically check all the disks you have scheduled.

when you run a disk check make sure all your programs are shut down including Internet close all your background programs too
when a program initiates it causes the program to cancel

If you just want a disk check try this, Start>run>'cmd'>(in the dos window) 'chkdsk' or 'chkdsk/f'> enter 'Y' at the prompt> restart PC.
It should check and fix errors at the restart.
