How/Where do you learn to become a dog trainer?

My new puppy is not only BEAUTIFUL but he is a GENIUS! He is only 8 weeks old and is already crate trained and house broken! I have only had him for 2 days! Sorry - I had to brag I am a proud mama! But seriously - he should be on T.V.!!! (he's a miniature goldendoodle).

Anyway I have always loved dogs and would love to learn more about training - not just obedience training - but also training to do tricks etc - like animals used on television....

Thanks.

Update:

Ps: I live in Canada.

It's great that you're having fun with your pup! It's never too early to start working on tricks, and to keep on reinforcing the good behaviors that you want your puppy to repeat. A great foundation that you build now will help you a lot in the future. Here are some sites to get you started, and some books.

Contact Animal Behavior College. This is where I took my dog training course and I mentored with trainers all over the city. Now I am qualified to offer any kind of training. Email if you have more questions.

There are numerous ways to learn to train dogs, but in the end every one of them relies on finding a mentor that will teach you.

"Dana Brown Ester started me on my path as a trainer and teacher. I owe her for more than she will ever know, definitely more than she has ever gotten credit for. When I approached Dana for help, this was her responce"

"I will answer all of your questions to the best of my ability and I will try to show and teach you all that I know. But, it is then up to you to apply what you have been shown in an intelligent, timely, and humane manner.

All I ask in return is that your mind remains open to what is offered, not just by me now, but by others in the future and not just to people and ideas you respect but to the ones you respect the least.

What you learn - pass on. There are no secrets"

Any school near you should offer Ob classes. Some even offer dog tricks classes, but you have to make sure your dog is OB trained first.
