Do you read movie reviews of movies you really want to see?

I usually do that AFTER I watch the movie

No.

As a rule I like to form my own opinion as the reviews are usually written by:

A) Professional Movie Critics who are failed writers/actors and

wouldn't know a good movie from an empty Junior Mints box.

A good number of these people are paid to promote box-office

bombs in an attempt to fill otherwise vacant theater seats.

B) The ADHD hindered child and/or relative of the newspaper

publisher/owner who has the charm and intellectual capability

of a theater seat cushion. This informer of the arts talks or

sleeps his or her throught the film then slaps together 500

words and gets a by-line from Uncle Mike or Grampa Joe.

I prefer to see the movie myself, or preferably with a good and trusted friend, and form my own opinion. It's hard to judge a movie based only on the TV previews or teasers, but if there was a book, and you had read the book, then you might have a general idea of how the movie will be. Maybe.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy comes to mind. A story read by millions with a heavy cult following. Big on the written imagery; Tolkien was a great artist of the printed word, no doubt. But a movie? All three big books?

No F***IN' way, right?

Not at all.

Along comes Peter Jackson, veteran B-film and Zombie flick director and says, "Why Not?" He saw what Tolkien saw, and with those visions, a boatlaod of talent, and the wonders of technology, Jackson created Tolkien's world of Middle Earth for us.

How many people needed to see or read a review of the first of the three, The Fellowship of the Ring before making the decision to see it in the theater? I would venture to say that a very few, a very small few, might have needed that crutch. If you ever read Tolkien, and if you ever saw a Peter jackson film, then there would be no doubt; The movie would rock.

i read the reviews to find out what the movie is about; but i watch it anyway if the story line / actors appeal to me. WHat is written in the review does not guide whether I see the movie or not.

No I form my own opinion. Most of the movies I like get bad reviews and I usually don't like the ones that got good reviews. If it has an actor I really like and a good story I'll watch it

Because movies are pretty expensive, and because I don't have a lot of spare time, I do read them. Whether or not it influences my decision to watch the movie depends on what the critic says and how they support their opinion. It also depends on the critic - the local critic in my area is pretty conservative and a bit bitter, so I usually don't read his reviews unless it's to amuse myself.

often I love some movies that get real bad reviews and viceversa.

for instance I could never manage to watch star wars/lord of the ring pieces etc

i read them all the time, in fact im reading one right now and i go see the movie even if it has a bad review

Yes, I try to read them but I don't necessarily always believe the reviewer take on the movie.

So... What if you have different preferences and taste to the review panel? Think of it as only eating the food they eat! Everybody's different.. go and enjoy your movie!

No-- and namely because most reviewers are stuck on themselves and their own little petty viewpoint of the world....

I rely on recommendations of friends and the "word" from others that have seen the flick and can give their own thumbs up--or down !!
