what would be the best type of small dog to purchase?

I would recommend a Shih Tzu (or however you spell it) my sister has one and they are so cute and docile around children. they are reall loving also plus they dont eat much and dont need as mush exercise as other dogs. Go to the pound and see what small dogs they have available. I don't just say this because it is great to give a homeless dog a chance (although it is!), but also because you can meet dogs that are a little older than a puppy and then have a chance to assess their personalities. I would pick out a few candidates and then meet them by yourself. Do some simple personality tests--pick up their feet, gently pull on their ears, play with their tails--all things a child would do. Make sure you ask the people at the shelter if they have screened the dog for food aggression. The next step is to bring your kids and have them interact with the dogs you have chosen. Make sure the dogs aren't too timid, but also make sure they aren't aggressive towards your children. Another option is to check out a foster group that has already placed dogs in home with foster parents. Sometimes these homes have children, so you have a built-in screening process. The foster parents will be able to tell you if the dog has any problems with other dogs, cat, and/or children. If you do one of these, not only will you be saving a dog, you'll also have a much better idea of the dog's personality, than you would if you bought a small puppy. Good luck!

A Westhighland White Terrier is a very nice small dog, not hyper but playful enough and not too bad with shedding either. Also the ugliest little dog at the local pound will more than likely be appreciative of a nice warm home and can become your kid's best friend. The dog doesn't have to be fancy--just lovable.

Don't try for a Scottish Terrier though--they can be nippish around kids.

Well, I am not sure if this is a good dog for around children, but my mom has a Pug that is alot of fun and I think that breed might be good around kids. Depends alot on the dog you choses personality though.

Maybe like a pomiranian, beagle, or a Whippet. (A Whippet is a small type of Grey Hound dog.) All of these dogs are great with kids and also good about house training.

A yorkshire terrier is great around kids if its been brought up around them from being a puppy. Iv had mine for 2 years (iv had her since she was 7 weeks old) Shes great around my year old nephew aswell. First I would start with getting a dog that is non-aggressive in nature, because it is going to be around kids secondly it needs to be patient loving and loyal. I would suggest a King Charles Spaniel or a Dashund

a nodding dog. they dont need to be trained to go outside when they need to go to the toilet, they are great around children and dont bite either. they're small and will sit/stay whenever you tell them. they don bark at the postman and hardly ever leave hair around the house.

A yorkshire terrier, they are small, easy to train, lovable and good with children if they are around them as a puppy.
