I don't think there will ever be an answer to that question. I also think that even the writer of the series didn't/doesn't know either. If he did, he must have forgotten. Either that, or he wanted the audience to decide. I really liked Spiral, and I still think it's highly under rated. Although I will admit I was disappointed at the lack of explanation.
